I read The Closer. It is a book about two boys who cannot be friends because of their religious beliefs. The two boys, Danny and Reuven, are best friends. They met when their schools played each other in a baseball game. They live very close to each other, plan on going to the same college, and their birthdays are two days apart. They share many intellectual conversations about their families, their past, and their plans for the future. There is even a point where Danny and Reuven live together because Reuven's father is very ill. Danny's father Reb works for the religious community. They are Jewish. Unfortunatly, after the war and during the holocost, Reb forbids Danny to speak to Reuven simply because he is a Zionist. Reuven is forced to move out of Danny's house, and Ruenven is left to fend for himself. The boys both go to the same college, but still cannot speak to each other. One day Danny asks Reuven for help on his math, which of course relights their candle of friendship once again. Reuven visits the Danny's house and speaks with Danny's father, who he dislikes very much. His father tell him to come over once is a while, but Rueven has no intentions on doing that. Danny is afraid to talk to his father about his furture plans of being a psychologist, because his father wants him to be involved with his relgious community, but Reuven urges Danny to. By the end of the book, Reb apolozies to Danny and Reuben for their silence over the years. He also approves of Danny's choice to become a psychologist. The book end with Reuben asking Danny if he is going to raise his kids in "silence" like his father did to him. He say yes, so that he has the soul of a tzaddik.
I enjoyed this book very much. It is an easy reader and I would recommend it to others. It is a deep book and focuses mainly on the characters feelings and beliefs. It teaches you about the many problems we face in this world today. They are a lot of instances where two people cannot be friends because of their race, color, or religious beliefs, which is displayed in this book. It shows that there should be nothing to stop two people from being friends for something they cannot control. People expirience this everyday, and shouldn't. This book says it is okay. It's okay for two people to be friends no matter what. I know that a lot of people would enjoy this book very much because it probably relates to them in some way.
